From Anon: ”I wrote to the DA asking what their stance is on GMOs. They ignored me for four months. When I persisted, they fobbed me off by saying they had to comply with what the ruling party endorses … no argument, no questions. The DA is Pro-GMO. Their feeble response cost them my vote. I am voting for the party that supports a GM-free South Africa!”
Garbled press release (2012) from DA Shadow Minister of Trade & Industry, Wilmot James MP, calls for GMO approval process to be speeded up. He seems to be saying that lack of a testing facility & unnecessary labelling makes food more expensive for the poor? We have a state-of-the-art testing facility in the Free State, it checks for GMO CONTENT. There is NO testing facility anywhere that tests for SAFETY of GMOs. Food prices have shot through the roof, even though the majority of maize & soya grown in SA is GMO. The FEED Industry is screaming for cheap imports from S. America which were blocked in SA because they not approved here. So Wilmot is speaking for Industry here, not poor people.
