Driver arrested for possession of dagga

Masuku, who is a taxi owner, was apparently en route to Carletonville where he worked. He appeared in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court that day and was denied bail as an investigator had to verify his residential address.

BARBERTON – Local police intercepted dagga in transit last Wednesday when they confiscated 14 compressed rolls on the road next to Barberton Mediclinic.

The incident occurred at about 03:00 when officers, who were on routine duty, stopped a suspicious-looking Isuzu KB double cab.
According to Const Tutu Nkosi, Barberton police spokesman, they searched the driver and vehicle and found several bags of compressed dagga and crates of liquor. “The suspect, Sipho Masuku (44) of Mangweni Trust in Nkomazi, was immediately arrested. The dagga weighed 31,36kg and was estimated to have a street value of
R120 000,” said Nkosi.

Masuku, who is a taxi owner, was apparently en route to Carletonville where he worked. He appeared in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court that day and was denied bail as an investigator had to verify his residential address. He was expected to go on trial on Tuesday. Nkosi explained the seized dagga would be stored and once it was no longer needed as evidence in court, it would be burnt.

Meanwhile, the two suspects believed to be from Tanzania who were arrested on January 13 for being in possession of dagga with an estimated street value of R1,5 million, were granted bail. They were arrested at Swallow’s Nest in Hartebeeskop near Badplaas.
They appeared in court last Tuesday but the case was postponed because there was no interpreter.
