Binga man smoke dagga for strength to plough
A BINGA man recently stunned the courts when he claimed that he smoked dagga during the rain season to gain strength for ploughing.
Janiso Mudenda (24) pleaded guilty to the charge of contravening Section 157 of Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (possession of
dagga), when he appeared before Binga resident magistrate Mr Stephen Ndlovu.
According to the State led by Mr Bruce Maphosa on 9 January police officers were tipped that Mudenda had dagga. The officers managed to locate him, effected an arrest and upon searching him found 20 grammes of dagga on him with a street value of $2.
Asked why he had committed the offence, Mudenda said he was a seasonal smoker who smoked dagga for the purpose of getting energy to plough his field in order to fend for his family.
“Your Worship, I only smoke dagga seasonally and it is only during the rain season when I need the energy to work in the fields so I can look after my children. Other than that, I don’t smoke the drug Your Worship,” Mudenda told the court, drawing laughter.
However, the magistrate dismissed the claims before cautioning and discharging him.
