Siblings appear in court for dagga stash

Two siblings have been arrested for the possession of dagga worth E70 000 at Eluvinjelweni on Tuesday.

Sicelo Sibonginkhosi Shongwe and Fikelephi Nokwanda Shongwe appeared before Magistrate Siphosini Dlamini at the Mbabane Magistrate Court last week charged with the offence of contravening the Pharmacy Act in that they, acting jointly in the furtherance of a common purpose and not being holders of a valid licence or permit to possess dagga were found with 39 kg of the dagga, which is a potential poisonous substance.

They both elected to conduct their own defence in the matter, whereas Nomalanga Gule represented the crown. Sicelo pleaded not guilty to the offence whereas Fikelephi pleaded guilty.

He was though not acquitted and discharged, as it was a norm with other suspects. Gule applied that they be kept in custody pending setting of their trial date.

Magistrate Dlamini advised the two to apply for bail at the High Court if they felt they wanted to be afforded bail due to the size of the dagga they were found with.

He then remanded them in custody until July 16 pending setting of their trial date.
