Within 4 years of introducing GM maize to South Africa, the target insect, the African Stalkborer (Busseola fusca) had caused severe damage to maize crops grown within every irrigation scheme in South Africa. Farmers were advised and forced to to spray with insecticide at increased cost. Monsanto has responded by adding more insecticide producing genes which exude toxins.
