Mitchell’s Plain cluster commander Major General Vearey maintains Mitchell’s Plain police will not conduct search operations at schools, as it fails to address the underlying socio-economic problems rooted in many households.
“Using policing to deter crime at schools is not the best solution. We are there to prevent and investigate crime and not be used as a whipping stick,” he says.
“If a school identifies problematic children, we engage them in our social crime prevention programmes which enable transformation.”
